Dunluce Castle is surrounded by an area of natural beauty yet is steeped in history dating back to at least the sixteenth century. It is a physical representation of the old Gaelic Ulster, ruled by Earls and Lords, where leading families maintained grip over their territory as an increasingly aggressive English force perused their aim of consolidation.
The Castle's most famous occupants where the MacDonnell's who were originally from Scotland. It gradually fell into disuse as the MacDonnells moved to Glenarm Castle, which is can still standing to this day, and the castle was engulfed in fire in 1641. Close by is the ancient church ruins of St. Cuthbert's which is thought to be the burial site of sailors and noblemen from the Spanish Armada.
The ruins and surrounding area tell a story characterised by myth and legend. It is a site that is less trodden but sure worth a visit.
